The Murphy and Stewart Medical Office Buildings
The Murphy and Stewart Medical Office Buildings dramatically changed the way Asante Health System of Medford, OR delivered primary care services to the community. Their existing facilities were outdated and scattered around the campus area. They wanted to combine their providers into new efficient facilities that would be easy for patients to find. Asante hired Morss Architecture to do a feasibility study to determine where and what size to build satellite facilities for the Medford area. Morss determined that Asante should build two new facilities: the Murphy building to be located across the street from the existing hospital and the Stewart Building to be located in the southeast part of Medford.

Both facilities are similar in design. The Murphy building is designed for 16 physicians with ancillary facilities, and the Stewart building is designed for eight physicians and ancillary facilities. The unique design features of these buildings are large windows at the ends of waiting rooms (to get as much light as possible into the buildings), efficient provider working patterns with direct entry to outside parking for each provider, healing gardens off the waiting areas and translucent drive-under canopies that are designed to glow at night.

The process from feasibility study to occupancy was about 20 months. The Murphy building is 25,000 square feet and the Stewart building is 12,000 square feet. The project costs excluding land were about $125 per square foot.
